The most quoted line in the book, sitting in the least likely place.
Lamentations is written over the ruins of a city. Read the chapter from the start and you get twenty verses of a man setting down what has been done to him — walled in, worn down, praying and hearing nothing back. Three verses before this one he says plainly that his hope is gone.
Then: yet. Nothing has changed. The city is still down. He is not telling us he feels better. He is saying that mercy is not something a day can use up, and that the morning will bring more of it whether or not he has any of his own left.
That is a smaller claim than the one usually made from these lines, and a sturdier one. Tomorrow will be new. It will not need you to have anything ready.
