There are people who like you, and there are people who know you, and they are not always the same people.

Liking is not hard to earn. Good manners and a decent story will do it. Being known costs more. It means someone has seen you tired, or wrong, or frightened, and stayed anyway.

Most of us have fewer of the second kind than we would like, and we take them for granted, because they never ask for anything.
